The results of our recent TMF Saturday Poll provide a striking reality check on the state of gender diversity within the manufacturing sector. When we asked what tangible changes organizations have made this year to empower women, the response was lopsided: 67% of respondents pointed to flexible shift schedules as the primary driver of change.
While the shift toward flexibility is a vital win for work-life integration—especially in demanding plant environments—the data reveals a concerning “mentorship vacuum”. Mentorship programs registered a flat 0%, while Equal pay audits and Leadership fast-track each garnered only 17%.
This suggests that while the industry is becoming more accommodating, it is not yet sufficiently proactive in grooming female talent for the highest levels of the “Frontier.” Flexibility gets women through the door, but mentorship and pay equity are what keep them in the room—and move them into the boardroom.
True empowerment isn’t just about adjusting the clock; it’s about recalibrating the career trajectory. If we want to bridge the talent gap, we must move beyond basic logistics and invest in the structural growth of our female leaders.
