Commenting on the development, Ram Gopal Bansal, Chairman, BMW Industries Limited, said: “The commissioning of our Colour Coating line at Bokaro marks an important first step in our Greenfield expansion and in BMWIL’s evolution from a conversion-led business to an integrated, value-added downstream steel player.
The Bokaro complex will allow us to control the entire chain, from Hot Rolled to Coated products, and to offer customers the complete basket of coated steel: Galvanized, Galvalume, ZAM and Colour Coated, while diversifying our product mix and customer base.
Backed by strong industry tailwinds for value-added and coated steel, supportive government policy and disciplined capital deployment, we remain focused on ramping up this facility and creating enduring long-term value for all our stakeholders.”

Key Highlights:

  • First phase commissioned: Colour Coating line at the Bokaro Greenfield Downstream Steel Complex, Jharkhand
  • Total project cost of ₹803 crore; ₹341.6 crore deployed as on 30th June 2026 (₹139.2 crore internal accruals and ₹202.4 crore debt drawdown)
  • Funding tied up: ₹500 crore of debt from a consortium led by SBI, HDFC Bank and Yes Bank
  • Policy-enabled returns: Qualified under the PLI 1.1 Scheme for the Coated/Plated Steel category (performance-linked incentives on sales up to FY29), alongside benefits under Jharkhand’s Industrial & Investment Promotion Policy
  • Cleaner energy: Partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for PNG supply to the Bokaro facility
  • Full coated basket: Positions BMWIL to offer Galvanized, Galvalume, ZAM and Colour Coated products; subsequent phases include 550,000 TPA Cold Rolled Full Hard and 540,000 TPA GA/GI/ZAM capacities
  • Revenue commencement in Q3 FY27, with a phased ramp-up over the subsequent quarters

Strategic Significance:
Bokaro is located in Jharkhand, India’s second-highest steel-producing state, offering proximity to raw material sources and key logistics hubs. The expansion transitions BMWIL from a concentrated customer base towards a diversified mix of customers and end-use industries, enhancing revenue stability, while a wider value-added product portfolio supports improved margin realization across the cycle. The initiative is well aligned to India’s structural demand-supply gap in specialised coated steel, further supported by safeguard duties, Quality Control Orders (QCOs) and ongoing import substitution.
