“The manufacturing value of mobile phones has surged from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to a staggering ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24. More than 325 to 330 million mobile phones a year are being manufactured in India and on average there are about a billion mobile phones in use in India.”
According to the latest report from Canalys (now part of Omdia), ‘Made-in-India’ smartphones have surpassed the ‘Made-in-China’ smartphones in terms of exports to the US market. The overall share of US smartphone shipments from China came down from 61% in Q2 2024 to 25% in Q2 2025. Interestingly, shipments from India went up from 13% in Q2 2024 to 44% in Q2 2025.
“India became the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones sold in the US for the very first time in Q2 2025, largely driven by Apple’s accelerated supply chain shift to India amid an uncertain trade landscape between the US and China,” said Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Canalys (now part of Omdia). “Apple has scaled up its production capacity in India over the last several years as a part of its ‘China Plus One’ strategy and has opted to dedicate most of its export capacity in India to supply the US market so far in 2025. Apple has begun manufacturing and assembling Pro models of the iPhone 16 series in India, but is still dependent on established manufacturing bases in China for the scaled supply needed for Pro models in the US. Samsung and Motorola have also increased their share of US-targeted supply from India, although their shifts are significantly slower and smaller in scale than Apple’s. Motorola, similar to Apple, has its core manufacturing hub in China, whereas Samsung relies mainly upon producing its smartphones in Vietnam,” Mr. Chaurasia added.
India Rising
India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing and has become the world’s second largest mobile manufacturing country. In 2014, India had only two mobile manufacturing units but fast forward to today, the nation boasts over 300 manufacturing units, underscoring a significant expansion in this vital sector.
In 2014 -15 only 26% of the mobile phones which were being sold in India were made in India, the rest were being imported. It is worth mentioning that today, 99.2% of all mobile phones which are sold in India are made in India.

The sector’s expansion has also been a major employment driver, creating approximately 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs over the decade. These employment opportunities have not only uplifted the economic status of numerous families but also contributed to the socio-economic fabric of the country.
